The median of their statistic is ~ 31% of the opportunities. However, they don't consider advancing the runners to 2nd or 3rd with one out as being productive, whereas I do. The reason for this is that compared to a neutral plate appearance, it would NOT be productive ... but compared to the alternative of a strikeout, it IS productive. On the flip side, they do include bunts, which I don't, because they aren't particularly relevant for non-pitchers (and likely skew the team results significantly upward).Overall, I'm reasonable confident that the 40% is not unreasonably low. If it's a bit high, that's OK. I tried to make my estimates and rounding favorable to the opposing argument to make the result biased slightly in that direction, as opposed to being biased in the direction of my argument. Here is the link to the ESPN info:

If the guy hammers a ball that gets caught on the warning track to end the inning, he also robs the next guy of the chance. The strikeouts just look worse :)

@ Dave – Ah … but that’s really not a problem specific to a strikeout, is it – but rather, a problem with any out. However, what about those times that his strikeout ended the inning, and the next guy would have come up and hit a home run - but he didn't because the inning was over. Obviously we can never know "what would have happened". But those times he struck out with two outs, he did not give the next guy a chance.

Agree on your math and conclusions.
