In Sacramento and probably most other cities people contemplating bankruptcy are so devastated and feel so guilty about not paying these credit card debts, but this is perfect example for why they should not. I strongly suspect it had more to do with profits than with the mail.

All I can really think of is that maybe they have that idea that I am just one person, they are a multi billion dollar company, will it really make a difference? Probably not, but I stand behind my values.

I think the other thing people don't truly understand is that when I talk about the variety of stores I have to choose from in the States, it really is a BIG variety. There are so many stores of all different types that one could never possibly see even a fraction of them all. I mentioned this in my first article about cereal; clothing stores are no different.

In the US, a new law is going into effect that requires that credit card companies mail statements 21 days before the due date. I'm not sure what the requirement currently is. I've certainly never as short a turn-around time as 1 day.

I'm curious what the Canadian laws are on this issue.

Odd response from JC Penney. At the worst, they were going to lose a customer. Probably the best they could hope for was that you would remain a customer, but shift to using a different card (meaning they would incur merchant fees on the transactions).

Great story, thanks for sharing!

I particularly hate store credit cards! You are right, there are so many more options out there, why we fall for the 10-15% off our first order on these horrible financial instruments is beyond me.

My family and I are not immune ourselves...

We've had Victoria Secret Credit Cards, GAP, Banana Republic, Express, Sears, Target, Wal-Mart...you name the card, we've had them at one point and they all STINK!

Good for you for sticking with your word!

The stupidity of companies always amazes me. The little bit they gain from that service charge, they lose 20 times over from having an unhappy customer. Where I work, we always say that an unhappy client is like a walking negative billboard.
